During the visit to Mozambique last July by the International Coordinator and Secretary, Lorena Rodríguez and Purificación Vilar, they had the opportunity to spend time with the Congregation of St. John the Baptist in Nampula, as several of its sisters are Prayer and Life Workshop Guides. They also visited the school and daycare center founded by one of these Guides, Sister Asunción.
One of the Congregation’s tasks is to support children from very poor families who need help attending daycare or school.
They give them a meal (sometimes it’s their only meal of the day), buy medicine when they are sick, and buy clothes and shoes so they don’t walk around in rags and barefoot.
They currently help 680 schoolchildren and 120 daycare children. They also monitor these children’s progress as they grow so they can continue their studies at university or in technical courses. Thanks to this support, 17 young people are currently attending university and 5 are taking technical courses in nursing, physical education, and agricultural technology.
When they began this work in 1998, many children never attended school, and some were dying due to lack of medicine.
The Congregation manages the support received from benefactors who wish to help one of these children with a small annual fee to support their education and other needs.
The International Coordination congratulated them for this important humanitarian and Samaritan work they are carrying out, and they have been able to see the fruits of this initiative through the well-being and joy of these children.
